What are AI credits, and is the first draft really free?

AI credits pay for research after that — open-archive searches, roots searches — and for writing a third draft from scratch. No — the final, watermark-free PDF is a one-time purchase, separate from your subscription, and is never paid with AI credits. Once you buy it, you can re-download that version anytime at no extra cost. The watermarked draft preview you read while building the book is free on every plan.
